The little girl, that loved the Barbie doll, grew up to be Miss Massachusetts and to enter the Miss America pageant. Molly Whalen, our own Middleborough resident, was fabulous in her performance and beauty. She is a woman in her own right. She is beautiful inside and out.
Many people may be disappointed that she did not win, but, please, be assured she did.
She won in being picked to represent Massachusetts in the finals of Miss America. She won with her stature of poise and calm and talent and most of all her drive, focus and ambition. She won in her intellect and she definitely won in her representation of a downtown business called, The Burtwood School of Performing Arts. Her mentor and friend Lorna Brunelle has shown a great expertise in developing and molding a young woman starting at the age of five to go on to be talented ,poised, intelligent, and loaded with self-esteem.
This business, The Burtwood School of Performing Arts, on Centre Street, has now proven to all of America, the greatness it has, in coming from a small town, called Middleborough, Massachusetts. The school and Molly have put us on the map in a very positive way.
So yes, Molly Whalen did win, in many ways and thus, a great school has given us another community prize and pride.
From the Cabot Club sponsoring Lorna Brunelle to further her education, to Lorna using that schooling to mentor many fine young men and women, to parents like Bob and Maureen Whalen raising a fine young daughter, to people voting and cheering on a representative of our town, once again, it is proven that it “takes a village to raise a child”.
So now, our entire town knows, that the quality of children can be raised up with love, nurturing, discipline, education, sports, culture, arts, and community people all working together to raise the next generation to be the “best they can be.”
Welcome home, Molly, we are proud of you.

"I love Burt Wood so much, I'm sad to go home every day"

"There are certain things in life that are just worth the effort! Our experience at the Burt Wood School of Performing Arts fits right into that category. This past summer (2010), we enrolled our two older daughters (ages seven and five) in the Burt Wood Summer Arts Festival. Each day for four weeks, we traveled from Braintree to Middleboro, where our girls fully participated in rehearsals in preparation for the production of Godspell. The rehearsals were instructive, well-structured and lots of fun. We were extremely impressed with all of the Burt Wood directors (Miss Melissa / Director, Miss Lucy / Choreographer, and Mr. Scott / Musical Director), as well as the entire support staff. The production itself was excellent, both technically and artistically. It appears that this wonderfully positive experience has ignited a passion for musical theatre in our young daughters. Kudos to Lorna Brunelle and her wonderful staff for their excellent work and for their commitment to a performing arts
program that is second-to-none.

"Lorna, Congratulations on your new school. I can't tell you how happy I am for you to finally have your own showcase for your wonderful program. You have had such a positive influence on so many and given the gift of theater and arts to this small community. I thank you with my whole heart for having this program and what a difference it made on my daughters life. From walking up to that first building so long ago…to all the summer shows, I wish you all the best. Thank you again!

Nancy Jesus Nielsonwhat a difference it made in my daughter's life. From walking up to that first building so long ago...to all the summer plays. I wish you all the best. I do want to buy a chair...should I send it to your home or go by the old school? If you need help moving I am available to help...let me know. Thank you again. ♥

I am so proud of my mentor, my teacher and most importantly my friend Lorna Sleeper Brunelle for such an amazing accomplishment on the move and transformation of her new Burt Wood School of Performing Arts. If everyone in this world would strive to be just a little like her the world would be a more compassionate and warm place to live!

They are an amazing group of people who foster each and every students’ talent, individuality, and self-esteem with always a positive approach. Children learn through example and the staff at BWSPA are great role models!

The Summer Arts Festivals produced by BWSPA are always amazing and top-notch. The students work hard and enjoy every moment. The festival builds a great sense of comradery. We have participated in 4 festivals, and they have all been a very positive experience.”

"I liked the Burt Wood summer festival because it was fun. It was the best summer of my life because I met new friends and learned how to dance. I also loved being on stage with all my friends!"

"Now that I'm older and more mature, I now look back and see that the ten years I have been at Burt Wood have drastically changed my musical theatre acting, dancing, and singing skills. Everything about the Burt Wood atmosphere is comforting and warm. We are a true family! Even though I came a week late, my fellow principles and the rest of the cast welcomed me with the biggest hugs ever! It was one of the best experiences of my life and thank you Burt Wood for allowing me the privilege of being the Scarecrow and for keeping the spirit of the theatre alive!"
- Hannah Record, Summer Arts Festival 2009 THE WIZ

"Today, I was doing Meghan Redpath's eyeshadow, and I wanted her to relax her eyes and not squint so that i could put it on evenly. So I told her to lean her head back and pretend she was at the spa or the beach or wherever her favorite place was. Then I asked, 'Where is your favorite place to be?' And she said, 'Well, my favorite place to be is HERE.'" - Valerie Amaral, Burt Wood staff member Summer Arts Festival 2009 THE WIZ

"Hello Ladies,
Its Cam, just wanting to check in. How are all of you? Whats new over there? Well I have some exciting news from my end. I got selected to the senior district chorus and we just had our concert. It went wicked good. Also in Coyle's spring musical Bye, Bye Birdie I got the part of Mr. Macafe. The performances are April 16-19 fyi! I just also want to say thanks so much for last summer I learned so much and all of this would not have been possible without what I learned at Burt Wood!

"Miss Lorna and the entire staff,
Thank you so much for your time, patience and incredible talent in producing "Millie."  This was our first experience with the Burt Wood School and I was so impressed with the high level of professionalism and attention to detail from the entire staff and musicians.  What a joy it was to watch such an outstanding performance in a local venue!  My daughter is already missing her new friends at Burt Wood School and can't wait to see everyone again next summer!
Thanks again for a fun and well-spent July,"
Marybeth

"Bravo to The BurtWood staff, cast and crew - What can we look forward to next summer!"

"Any of Lorna Brunelle's students who have come to audition are far better prepared and have greater acting skills than any other child actors from the Boston area."
Angela Peri, CEO, Boston Casting ~ Boston

"Your professional and caring staff make each child feel like she's a 'star!'  After working just two years with Miss Melissa and Miss Lorna, Hannah's performance level has improved so much!  She is more equipped with the tools she needs to feel confident with each go-see she gets called to.  Thank you for providing her with so many opportunities to shine!"
Jen Miller-McEachern, MIT Women's Gymnastics-Head Coach

"The teachers are really nice! I have been going to Burtwood for three years and I really like it! I am very excited to start private voice lessons next year!"
Emily Ellis, Student at The BurtWood School ~ age 9

"I think Burtwood is a great place for children to be creative, express themselves and obtain confidence.  I especially like the "it's about what's on the inside" attitude.  So many things that our children see today are based on appearance.  Burtwood encourages working hard and having fun at something you love.  That's what life is... and should be about! Cassidy loves to sing... 24 -7.  And I was so worried about enrolling her into a program that would be overstructured and squash her interest in singing.  Thank you for keeping her interest, making it fun and encouraging her to love it more! We love you guys."
Pauline and Cassidy McGrath

"Thank you very much for providing such a wonderful opportunity for Kailyn this summer. She has not stopped smiling --or singing and dancing for that matter--since the day she started the Summer Arts Festival! I know that this will lay the foundation for many years of acting to come! It is so wonderful to watch Kailyn enjoy and put time and energy to something so positive!
Keep up the great work and thanks again!"

"Miss Lorna and the Burtwood School have really cared about me and helped me to believe in myself more which helped me achieve my goal in becoming the National American Miss Jr. Pre-Teen 2005!  I love everyone at the Burtwood School and I'm so happy I'm a student!" Jordyn Jagolinzer-Machado, Student

"The Burtwood School has made a huge difference in my child's life.  She is more confident than she has ever been.  Not only does she get to be creative and express herself, she also gets support and love from the wonderful Burtwood School staff.  The combination is terrific!"
Cathleen Travassos, Parent

"It gets better and better every day. It goes by so fast! I'm doing it again next year."
Tristan Roberts, Cast Member, 1999 - 2003

"Pageant preparation classes with Lorna have given me the skills necessary to walk onto the stage with confidence in my ability to express my own opinions eloquently and let my personality shine through."

"Working with Lorna in Pageant Preparation has made me progress to a much better competitor. I feel more confident in my abilities in every phase of the pageant. The Team at The BurtWood School has made me feel like a part of the family and created an environment in which I can thrive."
Karen Hammel, Miss Bay State 2006

"Heidi is in her 9th year ( I think) at Burt Wood. Burt Wood is so much more than voice class for Heidi. Burt Wood is frienship, support and a safe place to grow up.When we had to stop for a short time due to family circumstances, Heidi's response was, 'Mom I NEED Burt Wood!' It is better than therapy when she is depressed and she loves to share her accomplishments with everyone there because she knows that you will respond with sincere encouragent and or praise. As she came home this weekend from PCC she was rather homesick. Her words were: she liked her music teacher but she wasn't Mr. Scott, She liked her choreographer, but she was definitely NOT Miss Lucy and the director was fun and good but he surely wasn't Miss Melissa. She misses Burt Wood terribly! I am hoping that this week is better for her and I am glad that she will have the opportunity to do the documentary on Thursday. "
