Absence / Make Up Policy
If you are going to miss a lesson, please try to give someone in our office at least 24-hour notice. If you know in advance that you will be missing a specific lesson, please let your teacher know and a make-up lesson can be arranged at that time. Students are allowed two make-up lessons per year. These make-up lessons must be scheduled within 30 days of the original date of your missed lesson. We do not provide make-up lessons for missed make-up lessons. If you give less than a 24-hour notice, there will not be a make-up lesson allowed as the teacher has to be paid for being present at lessons that are canceled on short notice.

This class has MOVED to TUESDAYS! Serpenteen is now on Tuesdays from 4:30-5:30 December 6, 13 and 20.  Belly Blast for adults meets from 5:45-6:45pm December 6, 13 and 20


 

Miss Amanda Kelly's Modeling and Elegance Classes have been moved from Thursday nights to Saturday mornings. (times are according to age, call Maureen if you need more info) If you are interested in taking the class, but were busy on Thursday evenings, please call Miss Maureen. Classes begin January 9th, 2011.

Our Film Production Class with Mr. Shane Kinsman has moved from Thursday nights to Monday nights. The class meets from 5:30PM-7:00PM.

Junior Glee: After the show stopping performance GLEE gave during the recital, several younger students expressed an interest in a Jr. Glee class. The class will meet on Thursdays from 4pm-5pm. Miss Julie will teach the dance and vocals and Mr. Daren will be teaching the music. The cost is $65.00 per month and meets from 4-5PM for grades 2-7. Please call Miss Maureen if you are interested.

 The Burt Wood School of Performing Arts welcomes Anna Ferguson and Valerie Rufo to teach “Building Life Skills and Relationships Through the Arts.”
 
 
The Burt Wood School of Performing Arts welcomes Anna Ferguson and Valerie Rufo to teach “Building Life Skills and Relationships Through the Arts.” The eight week course beginning on Monday, September 12, is designed to allow participants to express themselves through all aspects of the performing arts. Participants of all ages will discover the confidence building power of performing on stage while learning about costumes, set designs, creative movement, music, props, theatre games and character development, all while learning about appropriate social interaction. The class will feature guest mentor workshops and master classes. The eight week session will culminate in an open to the public performance on stage at The Alley Theatre in Middleboro.
 
Anna Ferguson has a Bachelors Degree in Special Education from Bridgewater University and received a Masters Degree in Education from Fitchburg State College. She has 27 years experience tutoring children of all ages in all subject areas. Anna worked in the Middleboro Public School system for 14 years. For the past 13 years she has been teaching in the Whitman Hanson Region School District. Anna has had a long relationship with The Burt Wood School of Performing Arts where she worked as a tutor for many years.
 
Valerie Rufo has a Bachelors Degree in Severe Special Education and has a Masters Degree in Moderate Special Education from Bridgewater University. For the past fifteen years Valerie has worked with academically challenged students focusing on life skills and building relationships in the Middleboro Public School system and community.
 
“Building Life Skills and Relationships Through the Arts” begins on Monday, September 12 and will meet on September 19, 26, October 3, 17, 24 and November 7 and 14 from 3:30PM-5:00PM. The final performance will be held in the evening on November 14th at The Alley Theatre.  This eight week course welcomes students and adults on individualized education or day hab service programs. Other community members who will benefit from this specialized creative program are encouraged to attend. The production fee is $160.00 for eight weeks. The Burt Wood School adds FILM PRODUCTION classes to their fall line up!

The Burt Wood School of Performing Arts in Middleboro, welcomes Shane Kinsman (director, screen writer, producer and owner of Maran Films) to their staff this fall. Shane will be teaching FILM PRODUCTION on Thursday evenings. Students will learn the foundation of digital filmmaking on cutting edge, state of the art, high definition cameras and audio equipment and create their own production from start to finish! Developed with the optimum mix of instruction and hands-on practice, students will be shooting in this program and have numerous hands-on opportunities to develop skills and gain experience. Students will participate in groups to develop a short film project. Groups will write, produce, direct, shoot and edit their own short thesis film. This course will make a filmmaker out of the novice! Classes will meet at the schools new location, 133 Centre Street, on Thursday evenings. Ages 8-11 will meet from 4:30pm-5:30pm, and ages 12-18 will meet from 5:30-7:00PM. Classes begin the week of September 13th, 2010.

MORE NEW CLASSES!

The Burt Wood School of Performing Arts is thrilled to announce two new acting courses to be offered in the fall. The courses will be taught by Mr. Matthew Bruffee, a Middleboro native who has been involved with the theatrical profession for his entire life, either as an actor, singer, choreographer, designer, director or producer. Mr. Bruffee has two degrees in professional theater: a BA from Hofstra University, where he studied and performed Shakespeare, and an MFA from Brooklyn College. He lived and worked professionally in New York, on Broadway and off Broadway, and in Regional Theatre for many years.

Amanda Kelly, Miss Massachusetts 2009, will be joining the staff at The Burt Wood School of Performing Arts in Middleboro this fall to teach Modeling & Elegance

Braintree native Amanda Kelly, Miss Massachusetts 2009, will be joining the staff at The Burt Wood School of Performing Arts in Middleboro this fall to teach M.E.Modeling & Elegance-A Young Girls Guide to Becoming Her Best "M.E." Students will learn how to dress for any occasion, how to care for their skin, nails, teeth, and hair, how to select and apply make up, how to avoid gossip and other unbecoming social behaviors, proper web etiquette, how to handle and manage daily not so pretty problems with peers, how to walk down a street or runway with perfect posture and poise, how to be graceful and gracious, with manners, a strong image and perfect diction and speech, the art of letter writing and thank you cards, runway and photo shoot techniques, how to select the best accessories, how to exude confidence from within, how to make healthy food choices, the importance of exercise, how to nail an audition or interview, how to select a pageant, how to lend a hand in the community, how to select a modeling or talent agency, how to say NO to unhealthy temptations and still be HIP, how to compose a resume, how to make an lasting positive impression! This class will meet on Thursday afternoons and will culminate in a public fashion show performance. 4PM Class ages 7-10, 5PM class ages 11-14, 6PM-7:30PM class ages 15-18.

Amanda Kelly grew up with a love for the arts, fashion and service. She enjoys sharing her enthusiasm for the arts with children and teens. Miss Kelly was a choreographer/performing arts coach at the first ever America Idol Camp, director/producer of middle school and high school musical productions, and is a collegiate dancer/choreographer. A trained, dancer, model and athlete, Amanda has done print and runway modeling for many years, and has produced several fashion shows for charities. She received her BA from Brandies University in 2008, in Hispanic Studies and Business. Amanda has a passion for travel and languages as she speaks Spanish, Italian and Latin. Currently she works in Human Resources for Walt Disney World Corporate. She is a philanthropist who has traveled the state promoting and supporting non-profits like the Make-a-Wish Foundation, The Genesis Fund, the Children's Miracle Network, and the America Cancer Society among many. During her road to Miss America, she studied voice weekly with Lorna Brunelle at The Burt Wood School of Performing Arts. Amanda is excited to be part of the Burt Wood faculty! Registration for The Burt Wood School 2010-2011 season is Monday, August 2nd, 2010, at 63 Anderson Avenue, in Middleboro. Classes begin at their new location 133 Centre Street, Middleboro, on September 13, 2010.


SATURDAYS 1PM-3PM

Shakespeare 101 - The Bard and the Boards appropriate for ages high school -adult. Students will explore the wonderful world of Shakespeare through reading the plays and sonnets. The course will include acting and scene study, working with diction and rhythms of the language, partnering and character work, and movement and costuming. This class will meet on Saturdays from 1-3PM. MONDAYS 7-8:30PM.

Acting 101: Basic Principles of learning how to become an Actor
taught by Mr. Bruffee. Acting 101will be a how-to class on working with directors and other actors in musicals or plays. Students will learn to create characters, develop monologues and study scenes through the processes and mechanics of breaking down a script, and putting it up on it's feet. Techniques learned will include research, auditioning, character study, movement, speech - dialects/accents, scene study, reacting and more. The class meets on Mondays from 7:00-:8:30PM for ages 8th grade and up.

Both Shakespeare 101 and Acting 101 will be taught at the Burt Wood School’s new location at 133 Centre Street in Middleboro. Jen Thomas will be teaching Tap, Jazz, and the GLEE CHOIR (modeled after the hit TV show) on Mondays and Tuesday this fall the school's new location in downtown Middleboro. NEW CLASSES
MONDAY NIGHT PRINCIPLES OF ACTING 101: MONDAYS 7-8:30PM

Combo Jazz / Tap - 1Hour Lesson
This class will consist of a ½ hour of jazz instruction and a ½ hour of tap instruction. Classes will be determined by age at first. No experience necessary. If a student has prior dance experience, changes in level will be made upon teacher evaluation. Students will need black jazz shoes and black tap shoes. Attire should be black leotard and tights…shorts or dance capris are acceptable also. Please no baggy clothing, pajamas, jeans or oversized t-shirts. Shoes and dancewear can be purchased at:

**Costume Requirements: Students will be required to purchase 1 specialty costume for the spring recital that will be chosen by Miss Jen and ordered in January.

“So You Think You Can Dance Troupe”
Dance experience necessary and enrollment in dance program encouraged. This class will consist of learning different styles of choreography as well as provide students the opportunity to use their own creativity to come up with student choreographed pieces. There will be extra performance opportunities throughout the year, which will require a bigger commitment. Class attendance is critical. We will prepare pieces to take on the road to nursing homes, community and civic events as well charity performances. Proper dance attire required as well as black jazz shoes and tap shoes.

“Glee Choir”
This high energy class based on the concept from the hit TV show “GLEE” will be taught by Mr. Scott Phillie who will teach the vocal arrangements and Jen Thomas who will teach the choreography. No dance experience is required. This class is sure to be a blast! Extra performance opportunities may arise throughout the year.

YOGA FOR KIDS with Miss Julie. Ages 7-11. Yoga for Kids (30 minutes; Thursdays 4:00-4:30)
Thirty-minute class for kids 7-12 years old who want to learn how to channel their energy and calm their nerves- especially before going on stage! You will learn several different poses and stretches that will make you more flexible, active, energized and in tune with your body and mind. You will also learn relaxation and meditation methods that are helpful for anyone- and definitely for performers!

Thursday 4:30PM-5:15PM
YOGA FOR TEENS with Miss Julie. Ages 12-Up. Yoga for Teens (45 minutes; Thursdays 4:30-5:15)
Forty-five-minute class for ages 12 and up. Yoga is taught in many college-level acting classes as a way for the performer to become one with his/her body. Along with being great exercise, yoga also teaches you how to relax, meditate, and calm your nerves. It's a great healthy way to keep active and prepare yourself for acting, dance, or performances.

Thursday 5:15PM-6:15PM

COMEDY & IMPROV with Miss Julie. Grades 5 and Up. Comedy and Improvisation (1 Hour; Thursdays 5:15-6:15)
For grades 6 and up, this one-hour class will teach the performer some of the great comedy styles and rules- there are RULES to comedy (who knew?)! This class will focus on short scenes and skits to practice the comedy stylings and will also offer plenty of time for improvisation. Improvisation keeps the actors on their toes and encourages creativity and quick thinking!

Thursday 6:15PM-7:45PM
The Burt Wood Players with Miss Julie. (Production Class) (1.5 Hours; Thursdays 6:15-7:45)
A GREAT class if you love to perform! This 1.5 Hour class will have the opportunity to put on 2-3 full-scale performances a year in our brand-new theatre, as well as mini performances throughout the year. Auditions will be held for each performance, but everyone will have a role! Add to your repertoire and resume quickly this year by signing up to be a part of The Burt Wood Players.

Wednesday 6PM-7:30PM
Adults Acting Up with Miss Julie. Ages 18 to adult. (1.5 Hours; Wednesdays 6:00-7:30)
Finally a class for adults!! Brush up on your acting skills and have fun. This 1.5 hour class will focus on scene study, monologues, audition techniques, as well as some improvisation work. We'll study everything from classic to contemporary, dramatic to comedic. Whether you're finishing up high school, attending college, or have grandkids, all are welcome.

Group Lessons in Musical Theater, Film Production, Tap, Jazz, Glee Choir, Shakespeare, Tiny Tunes, Acting, Advanced Performance, Actors Tool Kit, and Extreme Acting, (Based on 30 lessons per year for every student).
